Role of Debate in teaching-learning


The debate is a process that involves formal discussion on a particular topic. A structured way of exploring the range of views on a relevant issue. It consists of a structured contest of argumentation, in which two opposing individuals or teams defend and attack a given proposition.

It is a teaching strategy in which form 2 groups express their opinion for and against a particular topic.
In the debate, the pupil can go deep into the minute aspects of the relevant topic.  They can justify their opinion logically and listen patiently to the view of others.
The topic selected for the debate must be relevant and suitable for the expression of divergent points of view. 

How to debate?

 Before the debate, justify the stand or position of participants regarding the topic.
 The supporters and opponents are divided into separate groups.
Pros Side:  The pro or affirmative side supports a proposition.
Cons Side: The contra or converse side opposes the proposition.
The teacher or one of the learners has the responsibility of the moderator.
The moderator introduces the topic, controls the discussion and prevents the debate from deviating from main issues allotting time. The moderator is the one who sets the tone of the debate.
After the introduction by the moderator the pro side or supporters get the first opportunity to present their opinions, ie debate opens from the pro side. 
Hot discussions & arguments, healthy criticism  & crossfire takes place
Pinpointing time, date, and venue of important incidents in talks, timely and appropriate use of humor and idioms during arguments, bringing statistical evidence to support arguments, etc makes the debate session live and interesting.

Debate Do's
  • Be polite and courteous.
  • Listen attentively.
  • Be respectful and supportive of peers.
  • Avoid inappropriate noises.
  • Speak only when recognized by the moderator.
  • Do not monopolize the debate,
  • Use grammatically correct language.
  • Speak clearly with reasonable pace and sound.
  • Speak with passion and excitement.
  • Timely note points for crossfire questions.

  • skill of questioning
  • proficiency in speaking, research, reading, writing, analytical thinking, communication, etc.
