Techniques of teaching science

Methods of teaching refers to the arrangement of the ways and procedures through which learning is achieved while technique of teaching refers to the special skill employed by the teacher in the course of teaching or instruction.

Major techniques

Drill

Purposeful repetition of an activity with a view to make the related skill permanent. Mastery of a number of skills could be attained only by individual practice and drilling

Review

An intelligent re-examination of something learnt with a view to make learning still more systematic and meaningful. Review involves recall renewal as well as establishment of new relation.

Narration

Means verbal presentation of subject matter in a lucid interesting and ordered sequence.

Illustration

Presentation of subject matter with the help of mediators (pictures, analogies, models examples, multimedia etc)

Verbal : expressed in words, stories, vivid description, comparison, similes, analogies,anecdotes etc.

Non verbal : models, pictures,sketches, maps, films, photographs, chart etc.

Exposition

A technique of giving new information initially and then clarifying it in detail. It promotes thinking.

Role playing

A teaching technique in which students assume an identity other than their own to cope up with real or hypothetical situation in the life with a view to internalize ideas and relations realistically.

Dramatization

Dramatization is one of the natural and systematic enact of life situation presented with a view to give a realistic and meaningful understanding. Difference between role play and dramatization, role play does not require a story.

Simulation

An artificial environment similar to that of a real one is created with a view to internalize the ideas and to master the skill involved in it.

  • Mini working model of an aeroplane to train a pilot.
  • Micro teaching

When the real experiences are dangerous, time consuming, expensive or unrealistic for classroom presentation simulations are best substitutes.
