Free software or libre software is computer software distributed under terms that allow
users to run the software for any purpose as well as to study, change, and distribute it
and any adapted versions.
Free software is a matter of liberty, not price: users, individually or in cooperation
with computer programmers are free to do what they want with their copies of a free
software regardless of how much is paid to obtain the program.
Eg: Libre Office, Audacity, GIMP,Canvas, Dr-geo Dr genius
FREE SOFTWARES IN SCIENCE EDUCATION
1. GPERIODIC
Gperiodic is a software which can be used to learn the classification and characteristic
properties of different elements in High school classes. A periodic table application to
browse and view detailed information of elements.
2. KALZIUM
Kalzium provides you with a lot of information about the Periodic Table and the
Elements in it. Using Kalzium visualizations of the elements is also possible. We can
visualize the Periodic Table of the Elements by groups, period, acidic behavior, families
etc.We can easily plot graphs using different properties of elements. Kalzium can also be
used to know the Changes in the states of matter according to the changes in the
molecular mass, temperature etc. of molecules.
3. CHEMTOOL
Chemtool is another application software used to prepare two- dimensional structure of
molecules of various substances. Along with the structure, chemical equations and
formulae can also be included in this. Besides these we are able to calculate the
molecular mass using this application.
4. RASMOL
Rasmol is a software which can be used to view and analyse the three dimensional
diagrams of different molecules. A file with the basic details of the molecule is given as
input in this software and a three dimensional figure of the molecule is displayed in the
screen.
5. PhET
A suite of research based computer simulations for teaching & learning physics,
chemistry biology and other sciences. The simulations are animated , interactive and
game like environment where students learn through exploration.
6. CELESTIA
3D visualization of space with a detailed model of the solar system including space
science.
7. STEP
A suite for simulating physics experiments. It allows exploring the physical world
through simulation. Eg; Laws of motion can be learned by means of simulation.
8. AVOGADRO
An open source ,free graphical software designed to act as an advanced molecular
editor, as well as visualizer. Molecular modeling, computational chemistry,
bioinformatics etc.
9. CHEMICAL CALCULATOR
A software calculator for chemistry. It helps in describing and calculating chemical
formula, molecular weights, mass composition and isotopic patterns.
10. GAMGI
General Atomistic Modeling Graphic Interface.
A program to build ,view and analyse atomic structures of molecules and compounds.
11. GHEMICAL
A molecular modeling software package having some 3D visualization tools.
12. K STARS
An astronomy based software – accurate graphical simulation of the night sky from any
location on earth at any date & time. The display includes upto 100 million stars, 13000
deep sky objects and all planets, the sun, moon, comets and asteroids.
13. Dr. GEO
An interactive geometry software that allows its users to design & manipulate interactive
geometric sketches.
14. MARBLE
Marble offers different kind of beautiful and useful map views of the Earth including
OpenStreetMap. It can also search for place names and suggest routes.
15. STELLARIUM
Stellarium simulates the skies from anywhere on Earth in close to photo-realism. It is a
beautiful and engaging way to explore and increase your understanding of the night sky.
Users can see constellation art, deep space objects, meteor showers, solar eclipses,
transits, and more.
16. JMOL
Jmol is a molecule viewer and editor. It is a collaboratively developed visualization and
measurement tool for chemical scientists. It can read a variety of file types and print and
export images. It can animate the results of simulations.
17. POLYXMASS
Polyxmass is a mass spectrometry software. It allows the definition of polymer
chemistry and the simulation/analysis of mass spectrometric data obtained on
bio-polymers.
18. THERMOPY
Software utilities for Thermodynamics and Thermochemistry.
19. XEM
Chemistry program that calculates Ph balance. You specify acids and bases from a given
list, and in what concentration and volume, and the program figures the Ph.
20. GEOGEBRA
It offers an interactive 2D & 3D geometrical environment.
An interactive geometry, algebra, statistics and calculus application, intended for
learning and teaching mathematics and science from primary school to university level.
Constructions can be made with points, vectors, segments, lines, polygons, conic
sections, inequalities, implicit polynomials and functions.
Teachers and students can use GeoGebra to make conjectures and to understand how to
prove geometric theorems.
