VALUES & ATTITUDES

PRE-REQUISITES
  • The learner will be able to define the concept of refraction
  • The learner will be able to explain the science behind  refraction of light.
  • The learner will be able to provide examples for refraction from day today life.
  • The learner will be able to identify the path of refraction with respect to the densities of media

Refraction, medium, incident ray, normal, refracted ray

  1. When light travels obliquely from one medium to another its path bends
  2. Light travels at different speed in different media.
  3. No refraction takes place when light takes a  perpendicular path from one medium to another.
  4. When a ray of light is incident obliquely from one transparent medium of lower optical density to that of greater density the refracted ray deviates towards the normal.
  5. When a ray of light is incident obliquely from one transparent medium of greater optical density to that of lower density the refracted ray deviates towards the normal.

Refraction :
Refraction of light is the change in direction of light when it passes from one transparent medium to another obliquely

Experiment video demo :
An experiment is done with a coin placed in a bowl and gradually water is poured.

Observation :
From the series of activities & video demonstrations the pupil observes that light ray is incident obliquely from one transparent medium to another, its path undergoes deviation.

Communication :
The concept is attained through cohesive group discussions and worksheets.

Inference :
Arrives at the inference that refraction of light occurs when there is a change in the densities of media and in the path of incident light.

Different medium exhibit different densities

LEARNING PROCESS

          ASSESSMENT

Good morning ..
How many of you have ponds, lakes & rivers near your home?
Mm.. mm..
How many of you like fishing?
Ok fine,  in summer vacation  & other holidays we with our friends go for catching fishing.
You know there are different types of fish; in colour, size & appearance.
Ok students, How do you catch fish? What are the tools & materials mainly used ?
Mmm.
Very good … you are familiar with lot of common methods.

Now you look at this picture . Have you ever catch fish like this ?

Let’s watch a video  Catching Fish with bow

I think you all have enjoyed this .
Now I am telling about a real life incident. A real life story about a 13 years old smart guy.
Abhi, he is a skilled sling shooter. Do you know who is a slinger? One who hits the point plank using a sling.
One day , on a leisure trip to Kuttanad in house boat with friends Abhi’s eyes accidently  strike on a scene. He noticed a young man catching lots of  fish using bow. Keenly observed the tool used and he was highly motivated. Back to home Abhi’s whole thoughts was how to make a bow.
After he reached home , Abhi was busy with his ideas, he won in making a beautiful bow with the help of his elder brother.
Became so happy. along with his young sister he ran to the shore of the pond with his newly made bow With his bow he shoot sharply at the fish. But the sharp pointer hits a frog.

Abhi, Totally disappointed, he returned  home with that frog.
I aimed at fish but I got a frog instead…
Abhi think deeply.. “Am good in sling shooting, Why I fails in catching fish using bow ..?
Can anybody have a solution to Abhi’s question ?
Ok… Let’s do some similar activities in groups … after all you should tell the reason behind Abhi’s question.
ACTIVITY I

Students were provided with necessary task cards .  Observe this picture (pencil in beaker) and carefully answer the questions in the task card

DISCUSSION POINTS :

WORK SHEET

  1. How many media are present?
  2. How does the pencil size appear in water ?
  3. Is there any bent for the pencil in water?
  4.  Is there any deviation for the path of the light ?
  5. Is there any bent for the pencil when placed perpendicular between the media ?

                                                                   ANSWERS

  1.        Two { air and water }
  2.        Appears bigger
  3.        Yes it have a bent
  4.        Yes its path has changed.
  5.        No

ACTIVITY II
Watch this video and carefully answer the questions in the worksheet

DISCUSSION POINTS
WORKSHEET

  1.                  What happens to the coin?
  2.                  When did the coin rise?
  3.                  Actually was there any change in coins position?
  4.                 Was there any deviation for the path of the light?
ANSWERS
1.       Coin rises up (more visible).
2.      When water was poured.
3.      No
4.      Yes

REVIEW QUESTIONS

·         What is the reason behind refraction?
·         Give two daily life situations in which we experience refraction.

OVERALL CONSOLIDATION
Now can you tell why Abhi got a frog instead of fish while catching fish from the pond
When light pass from air to water obliquely it shows deviation in its path. So that Abhi seems the position of fish somewhat deviated from actual place where he shooted a frog.

The PhET Simulation provides a clear idea about the refraction of light.

  1. No refraction takes place when light takes a  perpendicular path from one medium to another.
  2. When a ray of light is incident obliquely from one transparent medium of lower optical density to that of greater density the refracted ray deviates towards the normal.
  3. When a ray of light is incident obliquely from one transparent medium of greater optical density to that of lower density the refracted ray deviates towards the normal.

Follow Up Activities :
i ) Dip a pencil in a beaker containing both oil and water. Draw what you noticed. Give the reason behind it.
ii ) On the bank of some rivers there we can see precaution board in which written like this “ The river is deeper than it appear to be. Take Care “. What’s the reason to place  a board like that?
