INFormation and LIBrary NETwork (INFLIBNET): 
 In April 1988, the University Grant Commission (UGC) constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Prof. Yash Pal, to work out the details of a university information library networking system.
Finally, in April 1991, INFLIBNET was initiated by the UGC  with its Head Quarters at Gujarat University Campus, Ahmedabad.
INFLIBNET Centre is an Autonomous Inter-University Centre (IUC) of University Grants Commission (UGC) involved in creating infrastructure for the sharing of library and information resources and services among the academic and research institutions

Objectives:
  •  To promote and establish communication facilities to improve capability in information transfer and access, that provide support to scholarship, learning, research and academic pursuit through cooperation and involvement of agencies concerned.
  •  To establish INFLIBNET: Information and Library Network a computer communication network for linking libraries and information centres in universities, deemed to be universities, colleges, UGC information centres, institutions of national importance and R & D institutions, etc. avoiding duplication of efforts.
  •  To facilitate academic communication amongst scientist, engineers, social scientists, academics, faculties, researchers and students through electronic mail, file transfer, computer/audio/video conferencing, etc
  •  To collaborate with institutions, libraries, information centres and other organizations in India and abroad in the field relevant to the objectives of the Centre


Goals :
  •  Achieve complete automation of libraries in educational institutions
  • Create union catalogues of documents available in libraries in online and real-time environment.
  • Provide seamless and ubiquitous access to scholarly, peer-reviewed electronic resources to the universities.
  • Promote digitization of legacy documents and creation of content in e-format (including electronic theses and dissertations, electronic version of research articles, working papers, technical reports, concept papers, technical reports, annual reports, statistical data, etc.) in universities.

Software used:
 Software for University Libraries (SOUL):
It is a user-friendly software developed to work under client-server environment  for promoting INFLIBNET.

N-LIST - "National Library and Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content "

The N-LIST project provides access to e-resources to students, researchers and faculty from colleges and other beneficiary institutions through server(s) installed at the INFLIBNET Centre. The authorized users from colleges can now access e-resources and download articles required by them directly from the publisher's website once they are duly authenticated as authorized users through servers deployed at the INFLIBNET Centre.
               As on Apr 15 2016, a total number of 5138 colleges have registered themselves with the N-LIST programme including 3799 Govt. / Govt.-aided colleges covered under the section 12B of UGC Act as well as Non-Aided colleges . Log-in ID and password for accessing e-resources has been sent to the authorized users from these 3799 colleges. All e-resources subscribed for colleges under the N-LIST Project are now accessible to these 3799 colleges through the N-LIST website (http://nlist.inflibnet.ac.in)

NEW INITIATIVES OF  INFLIBNET on behalf of UGC for the benefit of the academic community
 i) SHODHGANGA - A reservoir of Indian Theses

The Shodhganga @ INFLIBNET Centre provides a platform for research students to deposit their Ph.D. theses and make it available to the entire scholarly community in open access. The repository has the ability to capture, index, store, disseminate and preserve ETDs submitted by the researchers

ii) SHODHGANGOTHRI – Repository of Indian Research in Progress details (Synopses/Research Proposals for PhD programme)
 A repository of synopsis submitted to the universities for registration under Ph.D programme

iii) OJAS –  Open Journal Access System; a journal publishing platform

iv) SHODH SINDHU -  Consortia for Higher Education E-Resources
The main objective of the e-SinShodhdu is to provide access to qualitative electronic resources including full-text, bibliographic and factual databases to academic institutions at a lower rates of subscription.

v) e- PG PATHSHALA
MHRD, under its National Mission on Education through ICT, has assigned work to the UGC for development of e-content in 77 subjects at postgraduate level.
High quality, curriculum-based, interactive content in different subjects across all disciplines of social sciences, arts, fine arts & humanities, natural & mathematical sciences, linguistics and languages is being develop under this initiative named e-PG Pathshala.

vi) VIDWAN - The premier database of profiles of scientists / researchers and other faculty members working at leading academic institutions and other R & D organisation involved in teaching and research in India.

vii) INDCAT : Online Union Catalogue of Indian Universities
A unified Online Library Catalogues of books, theses and journals available in major university libraries in India.
